# Record a Vaccination

Schedule and administer vaccinations in Veterian — the form fields, the interval that drives the next dose, the four statuses and the Vaccine Calendar.

A vaccination is scheduled on the pet record with a date, rather than written up afterwards. Once created, it stays in the calendar until someone administers it. This is what allows reminders and the clinic-wide overdue list to work.

- Use **Vaccine Calendar** in the left menu for everything due and overdue across the clinic.

## Creating a Vaccination

1. Open the pet's record.
2. Click **New Vaccination**.
3. Choose the vaccines and set the dates.

**Vaccine List** lists the vaccines for that pet's species; the list differs for cats, dogs and the other species. You can select more than one at a time: *You can select vaccines that you want to create for the pet.*

> **Note**
> This list is not fixed. Vaccines are configured per species in the clinic administration settings, so if your clinic uses a vaccine that is not listed, you can add it there.

## Form Fields

| Field | Notes |

| **Vaccine** | From your clinic's list for that species |
| **Administration Date** | The date the vaccine will be administered |
| **Vaccination Dosage** | The dose given |
| **Vaccination Interval (days)** | The gap to the next dose. This is what the schedule is built from |
| **Administered** | Tick it if the vaccine has already been given, so you are recording history rather than scheduling |
| **Next Vaccination** | Generates the following dose automatically |
| **Send Reminders** | Sends the client reminders for this vaccination |
| **Tags** | More than one tag is allowed |

### The Interval and the Next Dose

The vaccination calendar is built on this interval. With **Next Vaccination** on, administering a dose automatically creates the next one at that interval. Turn it off and *The next vaccination will not be automatically created.* The course then stops at this dose, which is what you want for a one-off.

## Administering a Dose

There are two separate actions, and the difference between them matters:

- **Administer** marks this dose as given and nothing more.
- **Administer & Schedule Next** marks it as given **and** schedules the next dose at the interval.

If the date is not today, Veterian tells you and records how many days early or late the dose is being given. It does not change the date on its own.

> **Caution**
> A dose dated in the future cannot be marked administered: *You cannot mark this vaccine as administered. The administration date is after today.* If you are recording a dose that was already given, correct the date first.

> **Note**
> If the patient is checked in for a visit against a scheduled vaccination, the vaccination is marked as administered automatically. See [Record a visit](/visits/record-a-visit).

### Clinic Closed Days

If you pick a date the clinic is closed, Veterian does not refuse the entry. It tells you (*The clinic is closed on the selected date.*) and offers a **move to** suggestion for the nearest working date.

## Statuses

| Status | Meaning |

| **Past** | The date has gone by and it has not been given |
| **Administered** | Done |

## The Vaccine Calendar

**Vaccine Calendar** is the clinic-wide view. It lists what is due and what is overdue, and can be filtered by status and tag. Follow-up work is done here rather than one pet record at a time.

**Send overdue vaccination notification** sends the client an overdue notice from here. Veterian asks for confirmation first, because this is a real message to a client.

## Rescheduling a Course

When you change a date, **Reschedule Upcoming Vaccinations** decides what happens to the doses after it. With the option on, the upcoming dates are recalculated against the **New Vaccination Schedule**, and Veterian shows the current schedule beside the new one before you confirm.

> **Caution**
> Only vaccinations that have **not** been administered are rescheduled. Editing a past vaccination can therefore disrupt the schedule, and Veterian warns you when that happens.

## Deleting a Vaccination

Deleting is permanent: *Are you sure to delete this vaccination? You cannot undo this action.* If the dose was scheduled and never given, deleting it is correct. If it was given and recorded wrongly, correct the record instead, because what the patient received should stay on file.
